MBC’s Spotlight Charity for November

At MBC we’re dedicated to making a positive impact in our communities by helping individuals, families and organizations that make a huge impact in the lives of many throughout Michigan. One of the ways we raise money is with Friday Casual Days. Every month MBC employees have the opportunity to pay monies for the privilege of wearing blue jeans or other casual attire on Fridays.

The spotlight charity for the month is Garrett’s Space.

OUR STORY

We lost our precious son, Garrett, to suicide at age 23 on September 7th, 2017. Garrett truly represented all that was good in the world. A kind, compassionate soul who was always there to listen, he was also bright, extremely athletic and had a quick wit. When he began to struggle, even though he was surrounded by loyal friends and family who loved and supported him, he felt alone. He craved a supportive, holistic place to heal, but it didn’t exist.

OUR MISSION

Garrett’s Space is dedicated to reducing suicides and filling critical gaps in supportive care options for young adults ages 18 to 28 facing mental health challenges. We are working to restore hope and perspective in this population by promoting connections, self worth and resilience.

OUR VISION FOR THE RESIDENTIAL CENTER

Our goal for the center is that it be a supportive space with a non-medical feel, a haven from the outside world where young adults feel safe and supported. We believe this type of place could have helped Garrett, and we are convinced that it will help many young adults who are having difficulty navigating this increasingly complicated and hard world.

HOW WE WILL SUPPORT RESIDENTS

Our goal for the center is that it be a supportive space with a non-medical feel, a haven from the outside world where young adults feel safe and supported. We believe this type of place could have helped Garrett, and we are convinced that it will help many young adults who are having difficulty navigating this increasingly complicated and hard world.

WHO WE WILL SERVE

Our target population is young adults ages 18-28 struggling with depression and/or anxiety who can benefit from being in a safe, supportive and healing environment and see that they’re not alone in their struggles.

HOW WE WILL SUPPORT RESIDENTS

Our guests will engage in mood-lifting holistic activities, and we will work to promote connections and help them feel better about themselves and their lives. We currently anticipate our guests will stay overnight at the Center for three to four weeks and that there will be concurrent outpatient programming. Services and activities will include: group support, including support from peers who have experienced similar struggles; coping strategies for broken relationships; support for families; and an extensive array of holistic options focused on teaching healthy behaviors and promoting wellness, such as meditation, yoga, art, music, poetry workshops, journaling and healthy cooking. Our guests will be embraced by a warm community of caring staff, including nurses and social workers.
